Rivalry Week Not Kind To SEC

Alabama managed to hang on to its No. 1 ranking by scoring touchdowns on its last five possessions in an exciting comeback against archrival Auburn, but the Southeastern Conference (SEC) took a big hit to its reputation during rivalry week games. With the victory, the Crimson Tide claimed the Western Division title and earned the right to play Eastern champion Missouri for the SEC championship Saturday in Atlanta, while Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and South Carolina each lost to an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe. For a league that has enjoyed having four or five teams ranked in the nation’s Top Ten most of the year, the conference could have only Alabama in the elite bunch if Mississippi State drops more than six spots after being defeated by nineteenth ranked Ole Miss.
